🌕 Understanding Winter Solstice: The Shortest Day of the Year
Did you know that in Taiwan and many East Asian cultures, the “Winter Solstice” (Dongzhi) is a hugely important festival? It marks the day when the daylight is shortest and the night is longest of the entire year.
From this day onward, daylight hours gradually start to lengthen, which is why the Winter Solstice also symbolizes “The Return of Yang Energy”—representing hope and the beginning of new life!
🙏 Why is Winter Solstice Important? “Eat Rice Balls, Add One Year”
Traditionally, the Winter Solstice is sometimes referred to as “Dongzhi is as important as the Lunar New Year.” On this day, families gather for one crucial custom: eating Tangyuan (Sweet Rice Balls)!
- Reunion and Wholeness (團圓與圓滿):The round, colorful rice balls symbolize reunion, harmony, and happiness, with various sizes representing the entire family’s completeness.
- Adding One Year (添一歲):The elderly believe that eating Tangyuan on this day means you have officially added one year to your age. It is a ritual to give thanks for the past year’s harvest and welcome the New Year with fresh hope.
