July 2026 Events at Loosha

Life Traces of the Two-River Basin: The Ecology of the Luchuan River and Hanxi River

Do you still remember the wonderful lectures that Loosha jointly hosted last year with the Society of Wilderness and the WildOne Wildlife Conservation Association? Together, we turned our gaze toward the oceans and wildlife, leaving behind so many moments of inspiration and reflection.

Continuing this deep care for the land, this summer, we have decided to bring our focus back to the “Luchuan River,” the waterway closest to Loosha.

This time, we are immensely honored to invite the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU)Twin Pulses of Green and Dry: United in Water Stewardship” – Two-River Basin Guardian Laboratory , who have been deeply rooted in the local community and actively protecting this area since 2022. Through the unique lens of this professional team, we hope to guide every traveler staying in this city to rediscover this river ecosystem that accompanies us in our daily lives and is closest to us all.

Visiting Taichung’s Old Town, travelers inevitably make a pilgrimage to Miyahara for ice cream, situated right alongside the Luchuan River. They gaze upon the historical traces of what was once Taichung’s most prosperous architecture, listen to elders recount stories of the stilt houses that carry the memory of passing years, or wander to the Shin-Sheng Bridge, which has stood since the Japanese colonial era, imagining the riverbank scenery once lauded as “Little Kyoto.”

However, beyond the familiar history, culture, and architectural aesthetics, have you ever noticed the rich and diverse flora and fauna being nurtured within this quietly flowing Luchuan River and the adjacent Hanxi River?

While the water still flows beneath Shin-Sheng Bridge as it did before, Kingfishers and Little Egrets are now returning to the watercourses, and native plants are thriving along the banks. A vibrant urban ecological revival is quietly unfolding within this steel forest.

This summer, Loosha Hostel and the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) Twin Pulses of Green and Dry: United in Water Stewardship” – Two-River Basin Guardian Laboratory have officially launched a cross-boundary collaboration!

For our first ecological lecture, we are deeply honored to invite Associate Professor Sung Kuo-chang from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation at NCHU. Using the most vivid and professional perspectives, Professor Sung will lead us to understand the ecology of the Luchuan River and Hanxi River, listening to the stories of these rivers that are covered by steel and concrete yet remain full of vitality.

Whether you are a Taichung local who loves nature or a traveler just staying in this city, for this one hour, let us put down our phones and together get to know these rivers that are closest to our lives.

Speaker: Personally led by Associate Professor Sung Kuo-chang of NCHU’s Department of Soil and Water Conservation, demystifying the ecology of the Luchuan River and Hanxi River in a way that is easy to understand.
Time: July 25, 2026 (Saturday) 19:00 – 20:00
Location: Lobby of Loosha Hostel
Audience: All guests staying at Loosha are welcome to attend; travelers interested in the lecture are also welcome to join in the festivities.
